NVIDIA Unveils the First Top-to-Bottom Family of Cinematic GPUs

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 and 5200 DirectX 9.0-Class GPUs Deliver Cinematic Computing to Mainstream and Value PC Markets

GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE—SAN JOSE, CA—MARCH 6, 2003—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today introduced its top-to-bottom family of NVIDIA® GeForce™ FX graphics processing units (GPUs), designed to bring cinematic computing to all desktop PCs.  The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, the industry’s first value DirectX® 9.0-class GPU, and the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600, the industry’s highest performing DirectX 9.0-class GPU for the mainstream market, were unveiled earlier today at a keynote address during the Game Developers Conference, which is being held March 4th through 8th, in San Jose, CA.

“Today, NVIDIA is changing the way computer games look and feel,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA.  “With prices as low as $79, the GeForce FX family gives every consumer and PC gamer a platform for experiencing cinematic graphics the way it’s meant to be played.  With more than 1.5 million GeForce FX GPUs planned to be available by the end of April, the cinematic computing era is in full swing.”

Joining the award-winning, enthusiast-class GeForce FX 5800 GPU, the new GeForce FX mainstream GPUs are designed to address a full range of price and performance levels, all sharing the same cinematic computing feature set, including the CineFX™ architecture with advanced vertex and pixel shaders for stunning special effects.  In addition, the GeForce FX family of desktop graphics processors is supported by the NVIDIA Unified Driver Architecture (UDA)—the industry’s only true binary-compatible software architecture, guaranteeing software compatibility and stability, enabling the industry’s most reliable graphics platform.

The new additions to the GeForce FX family of GPUs include:

  • The GeForce FX 5600 GPU—Delivering cinematic graphics for the mainstream market, the GeForce FX 5600 GPU incorporates the full GeForce FX feature set, including Intellisample 2.0 for stunning quality enthusiast gaming.  The GeForce FX 5600 GPUs deliver 30% more performance at half the price of the GeForce4 Ti 4600.
  • The GeForce FX 5200 GPU—The industry’s first value DirectX 9.0-class GPU, the  GeForce FX 5200 GPU delivers GeForce FX cinematic computing and market-leading performance with best-in-class features and reliability for as low as $79 USD MSRP.

“In 2003, NVIDIA celebrates a decade of innovation and technology leadership in the graphics industry,” stated Huang.  “We continue this tradition by delivering a full series of DirectX 9.0 GPUs in record time, approximately 100 days from the release of the new DirectX 9.0 API.”

“New technology announcements are always very exciting, but the latest and greatest graphics features have traditionally been expensive and limited to the hard core audience.  With the GeForce FX family, NVIDIA is providing a platform for the masses to get the best gaming experience possible, at prices they can afford,” said a representative at Blizzard Entertainment.  “This achievement is particularly exciting for Blizzard and we applaud NVIDIA for reaching this significant milestone in PC gaming.”

Available in April 2003, the GeForce FX family of cinematic graphics processors is being offered by a record number of add-in-card partners, including Abit Computer, AOpen, ASUSTeK, BFG Technologies, Chaintech, Creative, eVGA.com, Gainward, Leadtek Research, MSI, Palit Microsystems Inc., Pine XFX and PNY Technologies.  For additional details, list of partners, log on to http://www.nvidia.com.
