New ‘King of the Hill’ 4MB board offers incredible performance at an affordable price

ATI Technologies Inc. (Toronto: ATY) today announced the XPERT XL(TM), the graphics accelerator add-in board that delivers big 2D, 3D and video acceleration performance at a price under $100. A cost-effective single-slot solution, the XPERT XL features the latest ATI RAGE PRO(TM) technology and takes the top spot as “King of the Hill” in value-priced 2D, 3D and video accelerators. Based on ATI’s RAGE PRO chip, the XPERT XL features the latest 3D graphics acceleration technology, including a floating-point triangle set-up engine, a 4K texture cache, bilinear and trilinear filtering, Z-buffering and perspective correct texture mapping. Using the newly-announced ATI TURBO Driver, the XPERT XL exceeds 480 Winmarks on Winbench ’98 (+), surpassing 3D-only specialty cards such as those with VooDoo chips from 3Dfx. With these specialty cards, users also need to buy separate cards to provide 2D and video acceleration. “The XPERT XL changes the value equation for quality and performance in value graphics cards,” said Alan McCann, director of board marketing at ATI. Previously, sub-$100 cards had older technology and poor quality. The XPERT XL provides quality and performance that rivals the $300 specialty boards for a street price significantly under the $100 price point and will secure our position as the number one board maker in the world.” The XPERT XL provides full-screen, full-motion DVD-quality video playback, full video scaling and true color display in any mode. In addition, the ATI Multimedia Channel (AMC) provides an upgrade path to new multimedia technologies, with ATI-TV, the complete TV tuner and future options such as DVD boards. The XPERT XL boasts superior 64-bit acceleration and a significantly faster 2D engine, ideal for all standard 2D applications. The XPERT XL achieves Winbench 98 scores (+) of over 135 million winmarks at 1024×786 in 65,000 colors. Razor-sharp display quality, with refresh rates up to 200Hz, is achievable on the widest range of monitors. The XPERT XL achieves 3D Winbench 98 scores above 480 million winmarks at 640×480 in 65,000 colors. Full Driver support Drivers will be available for all operating systems and APIs, including Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 5.0, Windows 95, Windows 98, OS/2, DirectX and OpenGL. All drivers meet Microsoft’s rigorous WHQL criteria and are suitable for systems which bear the “Designed for Windows NT and Windows 95” logos. Price and Availability The XPERT XL comes in a 4MB EDO memory configuration and is available in PCI and AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) versions with a suggested retail price of (US) $99. The AGP version of the XPERT XL is the industry’s only graphics board under $100 to offer the full benefit of the AGP 2X specification. The XPERT XL AGP board is able to treat system memory as part of texture memory, providing levels of realism and fast-paced action as never before. The XPERT XL AGP board allows users to take advantage of the new, massive texture applications and game titles and, with 4MB on board, provides the performance of a 16MB dedicated 3D-only board costing over $300.
